Jika Anda sering menyalakan komputer, pasti sudah tak asing dengan logo Energy Star. Ya, logo ini akan tampil pada layar monitor sesaat setelah komputer boot. Mulai tahun depan, Energy Star akan masuk ke versi 5.0. Nah, di versi baru inilah tertera beberapa syarat yang harus dipatuhi oleh komputer agar dapat menyandang Energy Star 5.0.
Energy Star 5.0 ini mewajibkan komputer mengkonsumsi daya sekitar 148 sampai 234 kWh per tahun atau kurang. Untuk notebook dibatasi hanya sampai 40-88,6 kWh per tahun atau kurang. Dalam hal ini terbagi 4 kategori komputer, yaitu:
- Kategori A (semua komputer non kategori B, C, D dan notebook) - 148 kWh desktop/40 kWh notebook.
- Kategori B (jumlah core 2 dan memori 2GB) -175 kWh desktop/53 kWh notebook.
- Kategori C (lebih dari 2 core dan memori lebih dari 2GB) - 209 kWh desktop/88,5 kWh notebook.
- Kategori D (terdiri dari 4 core dan memori 4GB atau GPU dengan lebar frame buffer lebih besar dari 128-bit—234 kWh desktop.
Selain itu, masih berlaku peraturan lain untuk power supply., yakni harus mampu mengkonversi power Ac ke DC dalam 85%. Sedangkan pemakaian daya 50% harus dapat dikonversi sampai 82%. Sementara daya 20% harus dapat dikonversi sampai 100%. Alhasil, dengan adanya Energy Star 5.0, energi yang terbuang pun dapat diminimalisir.
Syarat menyusul, komputer tersebut juga harus memiliki sistem idle, sleep, standby, power supply, dan sistem pengaturan power dari listrik yang dikonsumsi. Sistem Energy Star yang baru ini sudah mulai diterapkan pada 30 Oktober lalu (khusus untuk monitor 30-inch). Untuk notebook dan desktop baru akan dimulai pada awal tahun 2010, sementara itu untuk monitor 30 sampai 60 inch baru akan diberlakkan pada akhir Januari mendatang.
